Netcoins

Netcoins is the first publicly owned crypto trading platform in Canada to be fully regulated. Netcoins pay allows users to use their account balances through a pre-paid Visa card - adding real-life utility to their cryptocurrency assets.

My role: Product designer

My responsibility includes designing the look and feel of the physical and digital card. As well as designing card dashboards across all platforms (web + mobile).

The Netcoins pay project is proposed to help with our retention funnel, to entice the users to keep their funds on the account, and engage with their account on a daily basis.

I also see this as an acquisition funnel. There's a huge opportunity here. For example, Visa reported that last July, crypto-linked card usage has hit $1 billion, and less than a year later, it has already reached $2.6 billion.

In 2021, we have partnered with Koho—a Canadian fintech company offering prepaid credit cards—to launch Netcoins pay.

Launching the pilot for Netcoins' Pay program took about six months. This project was particularly challenging for me, as I had to learn the ropes while dealing with the confusing and ever-shifting criteria of Visa and Koho towards cryptocurrency.

The other challenging aspect of this project is the slow iteration speed. As every little change needs to be sent to three different parties for approval, it can take weeks for approval and setup with our printing partner. At the same time, regulations are being rewritten while I’m working on this project. This makes it difficult to test many variations throughout the process.
